I followed the how-to to install FreeBSD 8.0 Release in to a VirtualBox VM and it worked on the first try. I haven’t try installing any ports or updates to see what happens. One step at a time.
The FreeBSD site is now announcing the release of 8.0. As usual you can get it at your favorite mirror, although they are not all up to day yet so you may have to check one or two of them.

News sites are reporting the official release of FreeBSD 8.0. The ISO images and packages are available on the FreeBSD FTP servers, but their site has not yet been updated to announce the news. The links on the FreeBSD site to the 8.0-RC3 version send you to the 8.0 release files.
